You may ask what Hangzhou has anything to do with the Bible?
Nothing. Absolutely nothing. But there is a saying, “Up above there is Heaven, down below there is Hangzhou.” Has Hangzhou anything comparable with the Holy City, New Jerusalem? Nothing. Absolutely nothing. Abraham was looking, Heb 11:10, “for he was looking for the city which has foundations,
whose architect and builder is God.”
Abraham could not find such a city on earth. Our Heavenly Father, who is the Architect and Builder of the Holy City was so wonderful that He had the streets of the Holy City paved in pure gold. Can you find any country so rich that it has a city whose streets are made of pure gold? Not one. You cannot find a better country. There is not even a good society on earth.
In 1976 I went to the best countries in the world to
find a Good Society. The pursuit took half a year and it cost me a bundle. To my disappointment, I could not even find a Good Society. However, the best city I had ever lived was Hangzhou. The worst city I had lived was Washington, D.C. If you go to Washington, D.C. in the summer, you will suffer capital punishment for the heat. In whatever season you go to Hangzhou, the weather does not oppress you. The first time I had any contact with Hangzhou was through Zhejiang University --the Ministry of Education invited me to lecture at the University. And that was my first time to see the beauty of peach blossom along the West Lake.
I have been to Hangzhou more than 40 times, in all four seasons, so you know I am qualified to give advice about Hangzhou free of charge. It takes only one hour in high speed train from Shanghai to Hangzhou. Why people compare Hangzhou to Heaven? There are reasons.
Where to stay? I recommend Wanghu Hotel, which is a walking distance to the West Lake. At least you spend a week there to enjoy yourself.
Hangzhou is very clean. Once I stayed at the Shangrilla Hotel. I was surprised that the Hotel Manager told me that he sent his staff to pick up trash in Hangzhou.
Hangzhou is also a very civilized city, drivers would not hit and run. Hangzhou is also a safe city, you do not need to worry about crooks and criminals.
When you relax and sit on a bench facing the West Lake, you enjoy the beauty of the Lake, and also experience the tranquility without a beggar or robber to trouble you-- then you realize the meaning of Heaven on earth. You should spend days and hours walking around and explore the Lake. I even took a day beginning in the morning to explore the whole Lake by boat and by foot and went through the islands. You must experience drinking tea, various kinds of tea.
Once there was light snow on a winter in Hangzhou. I could not express to you how pleasant it was walking around the West Lake under an umbrella without fear. You must also buy a ticket to have a ship ride round trip of the Lake. Somehow spring is not a good season. The worst thing about a tourist is to be kept in the hotel because it was raining outside. During peach blossoms, it is a very delightful experience to walk around the Lake.
What to eat: When you have breakfast at Wanghu hotel, you must order beggar’s chicken for dinner. When you are out exploring Hangzhou, you can have lunch at any place of your choice. The fine restaurants that I used to dine no longer exist. The old chefs may have retired. A restaurant is only as good as its chefs.
What to buy: There are world class stores that you can shop along the West Lake. If you are woman, you surely want to buy silk dresses, beautiful scarfs and shawls (Hermes), silk handkerchiefs, etc. If you are man, you adefinitely want to buy T-shirts and hats and key chains. You must also buy artistic silk umbrellas, folding fans, etc. If you are rich you want to buy ivory folding fan, Chinese antiques of Ming and Qing dynasties are real treasures. In the cool of evening you can watch the Water Shows at the Lake. You must not miss the night market of Hangzhou. Ask the reception of the Hotel where it is, take a taxi and go to see it for yourself, they sell all kinds of cultural things. If you are walking tired in the afternoon and doing nothing, you may sit down under a big tree at the Lake and watch many tourists from all over the world passing by. There I discovered a Chinese little girl of Shirley Temple gentry. You may discovered something else.
